A little about me -
Growing up in rural Alaska in the ’60s where my parents homesteaded, I spent most of my time outdoors in the woods and on the water. I commercial fished both with my own boat and as crew on others. Kayaking with humpback whales and exploring the wilderness. This life spawned a deep desire to create art. The wild storms and incredible sunsets provide an array of colors that I love to translate into my work.
My first studio was quite unique, as my dad had just torn out the old wooden water cistern that we had used to catch rainwater in for the household. The shed it was housed in turned out to be the best studio I have had to this day, a waterfront studio with a breathtaking view, whales going by, sunsets, waves crashing in the storms – truly inspiring!
No matter where I have found myself, I always made room for art – even working out of tiny spaces on whatever boat I happened to be living on. Or while at anchor in a quiet cove getting inspiration from the world around me, with no houses or people for miles to be seen.
My medium is fluid acrylics and resin painting. I love the way the colors flow into each other, taking over my intention. Most of all, I love that my customers tell me they smile every time they look at their chosen painting.
Although I continue to create mosaics, the dynamic movement and blending within the color combinations of fluid acrylics are always an intriguing surprise.
My story, like most artists, is far from over. I’m always open to new ideas, and techniques, and love to explore where my audience will come from.
Through the harmonious blending of colors, I transform plain white canvas into abstract landscapes by pouring and blending layers of acrylic paint and/or resin, sometimes combining the two. I introduce the colors to each other, getting them to talk, and what emerges is a representation of what I see and feel.
I have an idea of the image I want to create and use various objects to move and blend the colors. Frosting spatulas, string, air. These are my minions!
Acrylic pouring and painting with resin has delightful challenges with unpredictable results. As the paints tend to dry quickly, I manipulate the colors, incorporating various mediums and babysitting each piece through completion. I influence the intended composition by pulling and pushing various colors as they merge and blend, sink and rise until they no longer listen to me but take on a life of their own.
Having lived most of my life in Alaska, near and on the water, the natural beauty of vast and amazing landscapes never fails to amaze me – the intense storms or the overwhelming calmness. For me, art is a spiritual path, a transformational process, a meditation, a symphony to be created. My hope is to convey what I see and feel through my art so that it touches your soul the way it does mine.
- What people are saying -
“ Seeing your art today took the heaviness out of my heart, thank you”
“During 2018 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. During my treatment, I woke up every morning greeted by my bright and colorful painting. It made me smile as I started my day. A year later, I continue to start my day by first gazing at my painting. It makes me happy.” Teresa – South Central Alaska
“The first painting I saw from Melanie’s collection was her painting of the ocean with ice floes and lava dripping into the ocean. Being from Hawaii, I was attracted immediately. I could “feel” the movement of the ocean, with the ice floes bobbing on the surface.
However I have a fascination with jellyfish and was so captivated by the sense of movement and flow in Melanie’s painting of Organic Nature, I couldn’t resist and chose this one. I love the effects of the bubbles in the jellyfish and background…it gives the painting an ethereal look.” Raelyn – Edmonds, WA
“Your art is so colorful, so explosive, so amazing! I love your waves, you nailed it! - Lisa- Ketchikan, AK
